Revisionism without review

The big ‘undo’ button

“I would like to revamp the telecom policy so as to take the country’s communication sector forward in a big way,” (incoming Communications and IT minister, Dayanidhi Maran) told the media just after assuming his office on Wednesday. He, however, did not elaborate on what changes he was planning in the policy. “I have just assumed charge. I need to first study and discuss with the concerned officials,” he added. [FE]

Even in a hung parliament, the government has the right to practise policy revisionism: but common sense dictates they should at least study what they want to revamp before pressing the ‘undo’ button. If every government decides to re-invent the wheel in its favourite colour, it may be a long time before they get to the engine and the car itself !
