A new toothless tiger
Pakistan has been rife with stories of the impending replacement of Prime Minister Mir Zafarullah Jamali due to his poor performance. Chaudhry Shujaat Hussain, a power-broker from Punjab and a leading figure in the Musharraf-created Pakistan Muslim League (Quaid-e-Azam) (PML-Q) has been touted as the new prime minister. As the real power continues to remain with Gen Musharraf, the choice of prime minister is only cosmetic and designed to keep the politicians doing what they do best – participate in endless intrigues.
The South Asia Tribune adds a new vein of speculation when it reports that the new prime minister will be Humayun Akhtar Khan, son of Maj-Gen Akhtar Abdul Rehman, General Zia’s ISI chief during the anti-Soviet jihad in Afghanistan. Gen Akhtar died in the air-crash that killed Gen Zia leaving behind a powerful business empire.
2004 is looking like the year in which so many prime ministers and presidents lost & got their jobs.
