India on the look out for a North Korean arms shipment

India’s naval intelligence has alerted customs and port authorities to be on the lookout for M V Shangdok. The North Korean ship is believed to be carrying illegal arms and ammunition and headed for India’s west coast.

Customs officials say this time they are not taking any chances as they do not want a repetition of the 1993 Mumbai serial bomb blasts wherein the explosives and AK-47s were smuggled in from the landing points along the western coast.

The then Customs commissioner (Preventive), in January-February, 1993, following reports in The Indian Express buttressed with his own intelligence reports, had issued a similar alert. But officers from both R&I and M&P did not take that alert seriously. That allowed arms traffickers to smuggle in RDX and firearms into the city. [IE]
