Bringing them home

India is making an effort to evacuate its citizens from Lebanon. Good

This blog has long held that protecting — and credibly demonstrating the intention to protect at all costs — the lives and well-being of Indian citizens living abroad, must be one of India’s key foreign policy objectives.

Good it is to see then, the Indian navy sailing in to Beirut harbour, to evacuate Indian citizens caught in the crossfire. And possibly, some Nepalese and Sri Lankans too.

  1. Glad to see the Indian govt acting. However, it seems all four ships combined can carry only 800-1000 people each time. Let’s see how quickly they get to evacuate the stranded Indians.

  2. They don’t need to bring them back all the way to India. Just getting them across to Cyprus is enough from there they can be flown back home. Good to see this inept Government doing atleast something right, anything at all.

  3. Apollo,

Yes. I wonder if the government could have requisitioned civilian transport for this purpose. I’m not an expert in this, but one commercial container ship can be used to evacuate thousands of people. The Navy can provide escort and possibly shuttle services. Then again, we are doing too much of an armchair thing.
