The farce is joint but the joke is on India

And you thought that the India-Pakistan Joint Anti-terrorism Mechanism will help prevent terrorism in India?

Pakistan, according to a news headline, is disappointed after terror talks with India. That’s because Indian officials reported little new on last month’s terrorist attack on the Attari express that more than 60 Pakistani passengers. The very fact that an India-Pakistan ‘joint institutional mechanism’ on terrorism can generate such a headline in the international media points to how big a self-goal (or hit-wicket, in keeping with the language of the season) Prime Minister Manmohan Singh scored at Havana last year. He pulled Pakistan further out of the international doghouse by claiming that it too, like India, was a victim of terror. Pakistan is now returning favour by attempting to push India into the doghouse.

Courtesy: Point Blank by Vikram NandwaniFirst, they accused Indian intelligence agencies of being “involved in sponsoring, training, funding and financing terrorist networks in Pakistan, especially in Balochistan, to carry out subversive activities through Afghanistan”. Next, they denied that a Pakistani could have carried out the bombings on Mumbai’s local trains because it was carried out by remote control. Finally, on being presented with the sketch of a Pakistani suspected of involvement in Attari express carnage, they questioned “why a Pakistani would kill his countrymen”.

Small wonder then that the Pakistani foreign ministry official should be pleased with the results of the joint institutional mechanism. If this is what transpired, then it really did go well for the Pakistani side.

The entire farce confirms the suspicion that the joint mechanism is really about playing to the galleries, conveying a sense of progress where there is none. As Offstumped points out, it serves to keep Gen Musharraf in power. It is another forum for India to take its charges to, the effectiveness of which is highly questionable. But it’s a wonderful one for Pakistan to issue its denials from.

  1. No surprises here. The Pakis are doing exactly what was expected of them- making a joke out of the whole thing and the Indians are doing exactly what we have come to expect out of them- make themselves the laughingstock of the whole world.

  2. This mechanism is a total joke. I was about to post on it, but saw your post first! This is going to degenerate to a quid-pro-quo based meeting. We’ll keep presenting lists to each other. There’ll be lots of photo opportunities. Why the (@*! are we making asses of ourselves? How can an anti-terror mechanism work when it talks to Pakistan’s terrorism mechanisms?

  3. At times I wonder who this ManMohan represents!Indians or Pakis? Why is he in tearing hurry to bail out Mush, when the whole world is coming down heavily on him and his terror machinery? Pray tell me,how does a strong Pakistan(enemy state)is beneficial for India? Gandhi agitated for releasing Rs.33 crores just after partition and Pakis bought guns and attacked India in 48.As my uncle(retd.Brigadier)say it often that Forces won wars for India and Dhoti Wale(Congress leaders)lost them at negotiating tables.
In this age where a conventional war, perhaps, will never be fought, diplomacy and negotiations across tables will be ‘fought’ it is a sad continuance of old practices at the cost of nation. And such an illustrated is negoitating,is more cause of worry.

  4. It is all aimed at the UP elections. Remember winning UP is necessary to come to power at the center. You are almost half way through if you get UP. See how the commies are also out to woo the “minorities”. Which is really a farce because if they were truly minorities nobody would bother about them.

  5. This was coming. Didnt I mention right when the joint anti-terror mechanism was mooted, that it was only becoz of US pressure to prop up Musharraf we agreed to this stupid ‘mechanism’. Later even the “shadow CIA” “Stratfor” confirmed this. In our desperation for the nuke deal(which now looks like is in the cold storage)Manmohan just played into Uncle Sam and his slave’s hand.

Yes, indeed the joke is on us. Shameful I say!

  6. Nitin, the man will not go gracefully. Wish there was an impeachment mechanism.

Sad, sad, sad. We have seen the enemy and it is our “leaders.”
