Ladies and gentlemen, the United Nations!

Yes, ‘n’ how many deaths will it take till he knows; That too many people have died?

China and Russia blocked U.S. and European efforts in the United Nations Security Council to condemn Myanmar’s military-run government for its crackdown on protesters.

Envoys from China and Russia, which have economic interests in Myanmar and are among the few countries with influence over the government, said they didn’t think the situation was a threat to international or regional peace and security. That’s the threshold for greater Security Council involvement. [Bloomberg]

If the UN Security Council was a place for the permanent members to protect their own interests, the UN Human Rights Council is a joke. It has already deemed that disrespect for religion is a violation of human rights. And among the first countries it will report on is India. Myanmar, Sudan and Zimbabwe have until 2011 to face scrutiny.

  1. I think Thomas Friedman described it best: We’re in a post-post-Cold War world. We can easily the new contours of it already: with China and Russia on one side, and the United States, France and the United Kingdom on the other.

  2. A bigger joke is America and Europe condemning the Burmese regime for the crackdown on pro-Democracy protesters while their blue eyed General pisses on the Pakistani constitution.
    Talk about hypocrisy.
