Musharraf plans another coup…

…against himself

More bombs target Pakistani armed forces. Hundreds killed in the battle zone at Swat. The judges appear defiant. Benazir Bhutto leaves the country for the security of Dubai. And General Musharraf examines his options:

General Pervez Musharraf is engaged in marathon sessions with his political and military advisors to examine various options on how to proceed ahead by holding the Constitution in abeyance. It has been learnt that the Pakistan Muslim League (PML) leadership is trying to persuade the president not to wind up the present political set-up because in that case the PML would also be a loser.

The sources said that it is likely that the president will follow the same route as in 1999 when the Constitution was held in abeyance and a provisional constitutional order (PCO) was promulgated to run the country. It has been learnt that PPP Chairwoman Benazir Bhutto is aware of these developments and that is why she left the country in a hurry. [DT]

Unfortunately for Musharraf, what worked in 1999 is not going to work as well, or at all, in 2007. What our analysts wrote several weeks ago remains relevant for those who want to get a sense of what next.
