We must look good

A rape victim was promised justice by Gen Musharraf. She is under house arrest; prevented from traveling abroad ‘because the foreign media would exploit her situation to hurt the image of Pakistan’. Her rapists meanwhile have been released.

The army has moved in to crush the trade-union at Pakistan’s state-owned telecom company. They were protesting against privatisation. Allowing them to stall the privatisation of Pakistan would have hurt the image of Pakistan as a magnet for foreign investors.

Thanks to such careful image management, Pakistan’s image, at least according to one visitor, has improved globally.
