Send me a fax. No you call my cellphone!

Maoist leader has talktime

Here’s a delightful passage from today’s Hindu:

Mr Chidambaram had earlier given a fax number of the Union Home ministry for (Maoist leader Koteshwara Rao) Kishenji to make his offer of talks, with the stipulation that there should be “no ifs, buts and preconditions“.

Kishenji had responded by sharing a mobile number and saying he would wait for a phone call.

“There has been no response from the government to the number we gave to Union Home Minster for talks so far. There is no phone call from them. This proves once again that Chidambaram is not interested in talks,” Kishenji alleged.

The Maoists would communicate to the media by fax if they received a “positive response” from the Government, he said. [The Hindu]

The Maoists will send a fax to the media but will not send one to Mr Chidambaram. They want him to call Kishenji’s cellphone. Clash of egos?

A deadlock like this can only occur when neither party feels sufficient pain in order to swallow pride and wave that white handkerchief. Mr Chidambaram should just wait for that fax.

  1. The game is not entertaining should chimbaram believe so, he should change his mind now. We are talking of innocent security mens lives here, not the vily politicians’.No negotiations with terrorists the americans say, Indian politicians should take a page from here and wipe out maoists. The nation stands by the delhi establishment in this I am sure. Maoists have blood on their hands, they are poor old innocent villagers out there waiting for alms, on the contrary, they are cold blooded murderers and, as a secular democracy its the governments responsibility to protect lives, if needed the waste bengal govt should be didmissed and fresh elections should be held in the state. The world is laughing at India and editorials are written all over the place on maoist massacres. Surething, in the event of a decisive action, the rights groups and NGOs will raise fists over that, remember though, that its their job to cry foul.

I would take that “no negotiations” line from the US with tons of salt. That is their official policy -they are more than capable of talking to terrrorists – look at what they did in Iraq and now what they are doing with terrorist nation states such as Pakistan.

India’s problems with Maoists are here to stay for a long, long time. Just like Kashmir, there is no solution that would satisfy both sides equally.

Chidhambram is making a fool of himself.
